Labor ministry-linked fund pairs home repairs for the vulnerable with trainee builders
The Construction Workers Mutual Aid Association opened its "Hope Repair!" program by renovating the home of a mobility-impaired household and plans about 20 more cases next year.

SEOUL — The Construction Workers Mutual Aid Association has launched a social contribution program that refurbishes the homes of vulnerable residents using construction-skills trainees as the workforce, the labor ministry said Thursday.
Under the program, called "Hope Repair!", the association pairs urgent repair work on dilapidated homes with on-site practical training for graduates of construction skills courses. The pairing is the program's central design: trainees get to apply skills learned at training institutions to actual construction, helping them enter the field, while vulnerable households get practical housing support.
The first household, a home occupied by a resident with limited mobility, received a plaque-unveiling ceremony on Nov. 5 to mark the completion of the work. Workers installed a wheelchair ramp and space for getting in and out of a vehicle, replaced worn-out windows and refurbished interior finishes. Trainees carried out the work under supervision from experienced craftsmen, including licensed master technicians, who passed on on-site know-how.
Target households are recommended through agreements the association signed with the Korea Association of Regional Self-Sufficiency Centers and the Korea Central Volunteer Center. Starting with the first home, the association plans to select about 20 more households during 2026.
"It is highly meaningful in that it shares the capabilities of skilled construction workers with the local community and provides trainees with a live practice opportunity," said Chang Geon, chairman of the association. He added that the association will continue to help improve living conditions for vulnerable groups and actively support new construction workers in settling successfully into the field.
