Korea Intellectual Property Office, Samsung Display discuss patent examination guide

The Korea Intellectual Property Office said Friday it met with Samsung Display at the company's Giheung campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, to share a draft practice guide for patent examinations in the display field and collect on-site feedback.

The meeting was aimed at improving the quality of patent examinations in the display sector and strengthening cooperation with industry, with a focus on sharing this year's draft guide and gathering on-site review comments.

The draft guide, being drawn up this year, incorporates examination practices that take account of the technical characteristics of display technology. The office gathered industry views through meetings and surveys with companies including LG Display in April and May, and the draft reflects the main issues those companies raised.

At the meeting, officials presented the draft's key contents and heard Samsung Display's review comments. The office said it plans to use the feedback to improve the consistency and predictability of examination standards and to develop the guide into a practical document that industry can use in the field.

"This meeting is significant in that we are refining, together with field experts, a draft examination practice guide that was prepared by reflecting industry opinion," said Kim Hee-tae, head of the office's semiconductor examination promotion team.

He added that the office will continue talking with industry to help Korean companies secure rights quickly and strengthen their patent competitiveness.
