The Korea Intellectual Property Office said Wednesday it published the first issue of "Intellectual Property and Innovation," a professional journal on intellectual property, since the office was established, with artificial intelligence and other new technologies at the center of the edition.

The publication, whose first issue carries the overall serial number nine, is produced once a year to introduce major intellectual property issues and trends in systems and policy. This edition covers the main issues and policy tasks facing the field as AI and other new technologies spread and as industry and society change broadly.

A section devoted to intellectual property discussion examines how functional claim language should be interpreted and applied to divisional applications, the statute of limitations on claims for employee-invention compensation, and the limits of AI-based judgments on patent inventiveness. It also looks at the registration and protection of intellectual property rights in designs drawing on cultural heritage, and at the cycle connecting intellectual property and creation.

A second section on systems and policy surveys developments at home and abroad, including changes to the intellectual property rights system in the AI era, European Patent Office validation, a Korean-style discovery system, confidentiality rights for patent attorneys, K-brand and ASEAN trademark strategy, protection of publicity rights, the post-quantum cryptography transition, limits on exercising trademark rights in the resale era, and how trademark examination reads the language of fashion.

"I hope 'Intellectual Property and Innovation' becomes a place where the possibilities of tomorrow are discovered in today's intellectual property," office chief Kim Yong-sun said. "The Korea Intellectual Property Office will also find answers in the field and back them with policy."

The journal is posted on the office's website, www.moip.go.kr, on the publications board under books and statistics, and will be distributed to related academic societies and affiliated organizations.
