The environment ministry said Thursday it will actively support Seoul Electric Industrial High School as it seeks to transform into a leading institution for future energy industry talent. Minister Kim Sung-hwan made the commitment during a meeting held at the school in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on August 27.

The gathering brought together the ministry, Korea Electric Power Corp and school officials to share strategies for nurturing human resources amid rapid changes in the energy sector driven by artificial intelligence and carbon neutrality goals. The meeting was convened on the recognition that fundamental changes are necessary at the school to achieve the task of fostering future energy talent.

School officials outlined their "Seoul Electric Centennial Plan," which aims to strengthen competitiveness as a Meister high school specializing in AI and energy. To realize this vision, the school is currently advancing a specialized research project to establish state-of-the-art educational facilities, secure excellent students, expand teacher support and develop new curricula. Major tasks will be pushed forward in earnest based on the results of this ongoing study.

To achieve the financial independence required for this transformation, the school is considering relocating its campus through the sale of its current site. Specific details of the relocation plan will be finalized after the research project concludes. Officials requested active government interest and support for consultations with the Office of Education, local authorities and Korea Electric Power Corp as they proceed with securing a new site and implementing development plans.

"Securing excellent human resources is key to the competitiveness of our country's future energy industry," Kim said. "We will actively support Seoul Electric Industrial High School so it can lead as a pioneering institution for training future energy industry personnel."
