Environment ministry releases free guide on microalgae preservation

The environment ministry said Friday it has released a free electronic guide detailing standardized methods for the long-term cryogenic preservation of freshwater microalgae. The National Nakdong River Institute of Biological Resources published the manual to address industry demands for more stable biological materials.

Microalgae serve as valuable resources for food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and environmental purification, yet traditional subculturing methods often carry risks of contamination or genetic changes. The new guide outlines protocols for maintaining cell characteristics in ultra-low temperature environments, with specific instructions on selecting cryoprotectants based on species and establishing optimal freezing conditions.

Researchers can access the e-book version of the manual at no cost through the institute's website. The agency plans to incorporate the guide into its annual expert training curriculum.

"The publication marks a significant step in sharing accumulated expertise with the research community," said Jeong Yu-jin, head of the Technology Development Division at the institute. He added that the agency will continue using the manual to train specialists and expand the application of preservation technologies across the industry.
