JTBC enters court receivership as Seoul court issues restructuring order
The broadcaster will operate under appointed administrators while it drafts a rehabilitation plan by late January.
JTBC entered court receivership on Friday after the Seoul Rehabilitation Court issued a decision to commence restructuring proceedings for the unlisted broadcaster. The ruling places the company under legal protection from creditors.
The court appointed co-CEOs Jin Bae and Nam Joong-kwon as administrators to manage the company's affairs during the process. Under the terms of the decision, JTBC must submit a formal rehabilitation plan to the court by Jan. 29, 2027.
Creditors holding claims against the broadcaster must register their debts between Oct. 9 and Nov. 6. Following this registration window, the court will conduct an investigation period from Nov. 7 to Dec. 4 to verify the submitted claims.
JTBC reported consolidated revenue of 190 billion won ($138 million) for the second quarter of 2026, with broadcasting advertising generating 92.1 billion won ($66.7 million) and subscription fees and program sales contributing 98 billion won ($71 million).
For the full year of 2025, JTBC recorded total revenue of 374 billion won ($271 million), with advertising accounting for 189 billion won ($137 million) and program-related income reaching 185 billion won ($134 million). Advertising currently makes up 48.4 percent of the broadcaster's revenue mix, while subscription fees and program sales account for the remaining 51.6 percent.
Industry data describes the South Korean broadcasting advertising market as valued at approximately 3.2 trillion won ($2.32 billion), representing roughly 0.75 percent of GDP. The sector maintains a high correlation with domestic economic conditions and suffers from significant seasonal fluctuations.
Many operators have sought to diversify revenue streams away from a reliance on traditional commercials, shifting toward retransmission fees, video-on-demand services, and direct content sales to domestic and international platforms including OTT services and other programming providers.
