Temporary nuclear-powered submarine project unit is formed
A temporary unit at Bangwi Saeopcheong has been reshaped to oversee nuclear-powered submarine development and domestic-production planning through 2029.
A temporary nuclear-powered submarine project unit was created, adding 17 staff to oversee development and domestic-production planning.
The Ministry of National Defense and Bangwi Saeopcheong established the dedicated organization to support the successful implementation of the Republic of Korea Nuclear-Powered Submarine Development Basic Plan announced in May.
The unit replaces the Korean-type Submarine Project Group in the Future Force Project Headquarters, retaining its predecessor's organization under a new name. The temporary organization will operate until Aug. 14, 2029. Under the revision, it will formulate procurement execution plans for defense capability-improvement projects involving nuclear-powered submarine development.
The 17 temporary positions comprise seven grade-5, six grade-6 and four grade-7 posts. The unit has four teams: the Nuclear-Powered Submarine General Contract Team, the Nuclear-Powered Submarine Project Team, the Nuclear Propulsion System Project Team and the Korean-type Submarine Force Project Team.
The general contract team covers nuclear-powered and Korean-type submarine development-related defense capability-improvement projects. The submarine project team handles development work excluding nuclear propulsion systems, while the propulsion-system team covers nuclear propulsion-system development and the Korean-type submarine team covers that submarine program. Separately, the revision raises two Bangwi Saeopcheong posts from grades 7 and 8 to grades 6 and 7 until June 30, 2029.
