The culture ministry said Tuesday its minister, Choi Hwi-young, pressed North Jeolla Province to conclude a joint hosting agreement with Seoul quickly enough to meet the International Olympic Committee's timetable for choosing the 2036 Summer Olympics host.

Choi met North Jeolla Governor Lee Won-taek at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the province's bid. North Jeolla has decided to pursue the Games jointly with Seoul, and Seoul has said it will cooperate actively in those talks.

Citing the IOC's schedule for selecting the host city, Choi said the two local governments need to reach an agreement soon, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said. The ministry and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee would help expedite the required procedures once the agreement is finalized, he said.

The meeting produced no further commitments from the ministry, and no date was given for when the two governments might conclude their talks.
