Korea's AI job recommendation service wins public-sector innovation award

The state-run Korea Employment Information Service won an award Wednesday for an artificial intelligence service that matches job seekers to vacancies, the labor ministry said, as the tool's user numbers have grown sharply.

The service's "AI job recommendation service" took an excellence prize in the "AI use case" category at the 2026 Public Institution AI Innovation Challenge, co-hosted by the finance ministry and the science ministry at Nurikkum Square in Seoul. The competition, run as the public-sector track of a national AI contest since March, drew 316 entries from 105 institutions, of which 30 were selected as outstanding projects.

The service, run by the employment information service headed by Lee Chang-soo, uses AI and ontology technology to automatically extract and analyze job competencies from resumes and recruitment notices, then offers real-time personalized recommendations. Since its launch in 2020, the agency has retrained its models, reflected age-group preferences and introduced deep-learning and similarity-based recommendation models.

As of the first half of 2026, job applicants using the service totaled 437,000, about three times the 2022 level, while the number of people hired into recommended jobs and enrolled in employment insurance rose to about 19,000, roughly 1.9 times the 2022 figure, according to the ministry.

"We will continue to work ceaselessly to keep improving services that the public can feel and to spread responsible public AI," Lee said. "We would be grateful if you would also keep an eye on follow-up AI employment services that are open or scheduled to open, such as AI job search and AI employment counseling."
