South Korea's food and drug safety ministry advised against taking propranolol, a prescription-only beta-blocker, to calm nerves before exams, saying in a release that "there is no medicine that makes you test well."

The guidance, issued with the Korea Institute of Drug Safety and Risk Management ahead of the 2027 college scholastic ability test on Nov. 19, targets teenagers and other test-takers. The two bodies produced an information card on safe use of propranolol and distributed it on Oct. 22. The card can be found on the ministry's website under laws and materials, then public relations materials, then general public relations materials, or on the institute's website under education and public relations, then card news.

The ministry's warning centers on the drug's side effects: drowsiness and fatigue, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension and bradycardia. It advised against taking the medicine without symptoms as a way of preparing for an exam, and said the drug should be used safely only after a prescription and according to a pharmacist's dispensing and medication guidance.

Propranolol blocks beta receptors in the sympathetic nervous system and is used to treat cardiovascular conditions including arrhythmia, angina and high blood pressure. It is a prescription-only medicine.

The guidance follows earlier measures tied to the exam season: an intensive inspection of ADHD treatments used by students preparing for the test on Oct. 16, and an advisory on Oct. 20 about caffeine-containing foods for test-takers.

The ministry also asked doctors and pharmacists to check a patient's condition and the purpose of use during prescription and medication consultations, through alerts in the drug utilization review system and through the Korean Medical Association and the Korean Pharmaceutical Association.
