Science ministry discusses AI strategy with Norwegian ambassador

The science ministry said it held talks with the Norwegian ambassador to discuss national artificial intelligence strategies and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in science and technology.

Second Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung met with Anne Kari Hansen Ovind in Seoul on July 30. The Norwegian side expressed deep interest in Korea's rapid AI development, its construction of an independent ecosystem, and the policy know-how used to encourage private sector spending.

Ryu outlined major directions for Korean AI policy, introducing efforts to build an independent AI full-stack ecosystem through cooperation between the government and enterprises. He highlighted the 'Three Major Megaprojects of the Republic of Korea' as policy attempts to secure technological leadership and sovereignty amid global AI competition.

Both sides agreed on the need to create a safe and trustworthy environment for AI use and pledged to seek global-level policy coordination. They also exchanged views on the role of government and policy support tools to drive and activate private R&D investment, sharing a consensus on the importance of public-private partnerships for national science and technology innovation.

"Both countries are partners with common goals of building trustworthy AI governance and achieving high AI adoption rates in the public sector," Ryu said. "We expect today's dialogue to lead to concrete cooperative outcomes rather than remaining a one-off event, so that both nations become leading companions in safely and innovatively navigating the global AI era."
