Interior ministry inspects key IT systems ahead of Chuseok holiday

The interior ministry said Monday it is conducting on-site inspections of 16 major information systems across nine institutions to guarantee uninterrupted administrative services during the Chuseok holiday. The National Information Resources Service, an agency under the ministry, is visiting operators including the Korea Railroad Corp.'s next-generation reservation and ticketing system to minimize public inconvenience in the event of system failures.

To address these vulnerabilities, officials are examining the impact of potential service suspensions on citizens, identifying immediate alternative service means, and reviewing internal and external system linkages. They are also analyzing specific operational methods for each system to prepare tailored response materials.

The agency plans to compile findings into response data to support initial situation assessments and facilitate joint responses. It will also strengthen cooperation frameworks between operating institutions and guide them on revised disruption reporting criteria and a new grading system under the draft Information System Stability Notice.

"We hope these on-site inspections of major information systems will help swiftly resolve public inconvenience in the event of disruptions and raise the stability of administrative services to the next level," said Ha Seung-chul, acting head of the National Information Resources Service. "We will do our best to provide uninterrupted administrative services by conducting special inspections from Sept. 1 to 18 and operating emergency duty shifts from Sept. 24 to 27 to ensure stable service of information systems housed at the center during the upcoming Chuseok holiday."
