Interior ministry trains staff to speed up document-free services

The interior ministry said Monday it will train more than 1,500 civil servants to improve the safety of the Government24 portal and accelerate its paperless administration initiatives.

Running from Sept. 15 to Oct. 2, the initiative comprises six sessions combining regional face-to-face workshops with online modules for staff across central and local governments as well as education offices. Training will begin in the Honam and Jeju region before moving to Sejong, Daegu and Seoul.

The curriculum focuses on maximizing the use of shared administrative information to eliminate unnecessary document submissions by citizens. The system allows access to 181 types of records, including resident registration certificates and tax payment proofs, facilitating approximately 2 billion data exchanges annually. By deepening officials' understanding of these tools, the ministry aims to stop the practice of asking citizens to submit documents that agencies already possess.

While many Government24 services are issued instantly online, some require manual verification by staff before certificates are released or faxed. The training will guide officials on processing these cases swiftly while adhering to strict privacy protocols.

To prevent data leaks, the ministry also plans to issue detailed guidelines on security measures, specifically covering the collection of prior consent and the management of access permissions.

Hwang Gyu-cheol, head of the AI Government Office at the ministry, said the training would strengthen the capacity to handle frequently requested services without forcing residents to waste time preparing documents.
