The policy change allows about 39,000 veterans and their families to access testing and treatment subsidies at local clinics for the first time.

The health ministry said Friday it will extend dementia testing and treatment subsidies to veterans and their families starting Aug. 1, a move expected to benefit approximately 39,000 new recipients. The expansion allows eligible individuals to receive financial support at nearby hospitals and community dementia support centers rather than traveling to distant designated facilities.

Under the new rules, veterans can claim up to 150,000 won for diagnostic tests and up to 110,000 won for differential tests depending on the medical institution type. The program also provides a monthly subsidy of up to 30,000 won for dementia treatment management costs for those meeting income requirements.

Previously, veterans were excluded from these community-based supports because they already received medical cost reductions at Veterans Health Service hospitals and delegated private hospitals, often forcing patients to travel long distances for regular care.

To prevent duplicate payments, expenses already covered by Veterans Health Service hospitals or delegated facilities cannot be claimed again through the dementia support centers. Applicants must visit their local public health center or submit requests via mail or fax beginning next month.

Jeong Eun-kyeong, minister of health and welfare, said the initiative will greatly improve access to early detection and systematic management for those who have served the country. Kwon O-eul, minister of patriots and veterans affairs, described the joint effort as a prime example of proactive administration aimed at enhancing the daily lives of national merit holders.
