Health ministry launches fourth K-CURE data contest for cancer research

The health ministry said Monday it has opened applications for the fourth K-CURE data utilization contest, aiming to foster creative research ideas through the first-ever provision of combined cancer clinical and public data. The event runs from July 27 to December, with plans to award ten teams that demonstrate superior analysis of the provided datasets.

Organized jointly with the National Cancer Center and the Korea Health Information Service, the competition provides participants with a remote analysis environment and pre-combined databases including breast cancer clinical libraries and sample data on liver and lung cancer staging. These resources allow researchers to track patient progress from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up without needing to physically export sensitive information.

Any Korean individual or team interested in cancer data research may apply by submitting a utilization plan via the contest website between July 27 and August 24. A preliminary document review will select fifteen teams, which will then spend five weeks analyzing data at secure centers before a final presentation determines the ten winners. The awards ceremony is scheduled for December during a medical data hospital performance exchange meeting.

Lee Hyung-hoon, the ministry's second vice minister, said he expects the contest to generate numerous innovative concepts given this initial opportunity to utilize integrated datasets. He added that the government intends to expand support for data utilization to ensure accumulated research experience translates into tangible outcomes for disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment that citizens can feel.

Researchers may continue to request and utilize cancer clinical and public library data through the K-CURE portal regardless of their participation status. An infrastructure of secure analysis centers has operated since 2023, with the ninth facility recently opening at Yonsei Medical Center in May.
