Health ministry moves to formally introduce abortion pills

The health ministry said Wednesday it will push to formally introduce abortion pills through the national medical system to resolve safety risks caused by illegal drug distribution. The move marks the first institutional improvement in seven years since a constitutional court ruling found the existing ban unconstitutional.

The Ministries of Health and Welfare, Gender Equality and Family, and Food and Drug Safety reported the plan at the 14th National Policy Coordination Meeting in Seoul. The initiative follows a July directive from President Lee Jae-myung to review allowing such medication.

Officials highlighted that the legislative void following the April 2019 constitutional decision has led to urgent health and safety issues. Unverified drugs currently circulate illegally alongside substitutes, while women face restricted choices between surgical and medical procedures. Delays in accessing care have also increased socioeconomic burdens due to rising costs.

"By introducing and managing abortion medications through the national healthcare system, we aim to resolve problems undermining women's safety and health rights caused by the underground distribution of these drugs," the government said following the meeting.

During the session, the gender equality ministry detailed the necessity of the introduction and its expected effects, specifically noting that formal adoption would allow the state to track usage patterns and ensure safe administration and follow-up care. The health ministry outlined a phased rollout and management plan, while the food and drug safety ministry presented its specific licensing and review schedule for the medications.
