Labor ministry vice minister attends APEC meeting in China

The labor ministry said Monday that Vice Minister Kwon Chang-joon attended the eighth Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation labor ministers' meeting in Nanjing, China. Kwon used his address to emphasize the nation's strategy for an industrial transformation that includes workers.

During the session, representatives from 21 member economies shared policies aimed at ensuring inclusive growth amid digital shifts driven by artificial intelligence. Kwon detailed the government's basic plan for employment stability during industrial transitions, which includes monitoring employment impacts and strengthening vocational training for AI utilization.

He highlighted the expansion of the K-New Deal Academy, a corporate-led training program in finance, electronics and mobility sectors, increasing its support targets from 10,000 to 50,000 people. The vice minister noted that specialized training for middle-aged workers seeking career changes remains a core component of the initiative.

The participating chief delegates adopted a joint declaration confirming cooperation on quality employment, investment in human resources and optimized social security systems. Kwon stated that South Korea would actively pursue related policy development in line with the agreement.

On Tuesday, Kwon is scheduled to hold a meeting with young South Koreans employed in China to discuss their local experiences and challenges. He plans to introduce the 2027 youth employment budget and gather feedback on overseas employment support programs such as K-Move School.

Meanwhile, the 48th International Skills Competition takes place in Shanghai from Tuesday through Sunday. Kwon will meet with the national team to encourage them.
