National Data Office marks first year with expert meeting on data bill

The National Data Office said Monday it held an expert advisory meeting on the proposed National Data Framework Act, bringing data specialists together to discuss how to invigorate the country's data ecosystem.

The meeting was convened as the office marked the first anniversary of its elevation to a full ministry on Oct. 1, 2025. Participants included Vice Minister Lee Myung-ho and outside experts such as Gachon University professor Choi Kyung-jin, Hongik University professor Chung Yong-chan, attorney Ko Hwan-kyung of Law Firm Kwangjang, Jeong Jong-yeol, a research fellow at the National Information Society Agency, and representatives from private firms including Korea Credit Bureau and SK Telecom.

Participants assessed the data ecosystems in both the private and public sectors and discussed directions for a desirable national data ecosystem based on the main provisions of the proposed act.

"I hope this meeting will serve as an opportunity to raise interest in the national data ecosystem in both the private and public sectors and to seek concrete measures to revitalize it," Vice Minister Lee said.

The legislation is before the National Assembly's Special Committee on Budget and Planning, which held a public hearing on it Sept. 17, setting the process in earnest toward passage within the year.

The office said the meeting was intended to deepen understanding of the bill and to discuss ways to invigorate the national data ecosystem.
