Science ministry holds second strategy meeting on AGI era preparation

The science ministry convened its second Science and Technology-Artificial Intelligence Future Strategy Meeting Thursday at the President Hotel in Seoul to discuss preparations for artificial general intelligence. Minister Bae Kyung-hoon stressed that securing top-tier AI models and establishing necessary infrastructure must begin immediately.

Experts discussed AGI, defined as AI possessing human-level general intelligence across diverse fields. Shin Jin-woo, a professor at the KAIST AI Graduate School, argued for expanding investments in computing infrastructure and data acquisition while creating a virtuous cycle where public sector usage of domestic models feeds back into further learning.

The agenda covered legal and social frameworks for a token-based economy and shifts in labor, healthcare and education markets. Choi Kyung-jin from Gachon University proposed designing laws to distribute costs and benefits among workers, enterprises and data contributors, while Kim Hyun-chul of Yonsei University called for reforms to protect youth employment and overhaul medical and educational systems.

Attendees discussed the impact of AGI on industries ranging from research and development to national defense and broadcasting. Bae stated that the government will use the insights gathered to proactively prepare for the paradigm shift expected to reshape the national system and daily life.
