Science ministry hosts quantum computing finals to tackle industrial challenges
Twelve teams will present solutions using actual quantum processors after a preliminary round attracted 214 participants.
The science ministry will host the finals of the Quantum Reframing Challenge 2026 on Wednesday at the Samjung Hotel in Seoul to identify practical applications for quantum computers in industry.
A preliminary round launched in June drew 73 teams comprising 214 participants, with 54 submitting project proposals focused on manufacturing, materials, finance and artificial intelligence. Twelve teams advanced to the finals after their plans were evaluated.
The finalists are divided into two categories based on the type of problem they address. One group focuses on computational science tasks where classical computers fail, such as calculating energy for nitrogen bond breaking in ammonia synthesis catalysts or predicting decomposition paths for battery electrolyte additives. The other tackles combinatorial optimization problems with too many variables for conventional systems, including assigning work to port cranes sharing a single rail and controlling low-frequency noise at outdoor performance venues.
Between August 13 and Tuesday, the competing teams implemented and verified their solutions on three distinct types of actual quantum processors: ion trap systems from IonQ, neutral atom devices from Pasqal and photon-based machines from Quandela. The final presentations will be judged on comparative analysis against classical computing methods, potential for industrial application and identified limitations.
Organizers have prepared a total prize pool of 20 million won ($14,460) for the top five teams. The grand prize winner will receive the Award from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT along with 7 million won ($5,061), while two excellence award winners will share 4 million won ($2,892) each and two merit award winners will receive 2.5 million won ($1,808) each.
Beyond cash prizes, sponsoring companies including Quandela, Pasqal and Kolon will provide special awards offering quantum computer usage time, internships and visits to global headquarters in France.
Kim Sung-soo, director general for research and development policy at the ministry, emphasized the strategic importance of the technology during the announcement. "Quantum computers are a core strategic technology that can overcome the limits of classical computers and pioneer a new future with massive ripple effects across all industries," Kim said.
