Interior ministry selects three public services to support couples

The initiative provides price comparisons, venue access and health checks as marriage rates rise.

The interior ministry on Wednesday selected three public services to help prospective couples manage costs and prepare for pregnancy: wedding service price information, public venue support and pre-pregnancy health management.

Marriage filings have risen sharply in recent years, jumping from 192,000 in 2022 to 240,000 in 2025, according to the National Data Office. The government said it aligned these services with the increasing trend and a pro-marriage atmosphere.

The Korea Consumer Agency now offers detailed pricing data through its online portal, 'Cham Gagyeok,' allowing users to compare wedding hall rental fees and studio costs by region and date. The platform also calculates estimated expenses based on specific items and timing, helping couples avoid unexpected additional costs or contract disputes.

Public institutions are opening unique spaces for ceremonies at low or no cost. The National Museum of Korea has opened its traditional courtyard, while the National Library of Korea and local governments offer outdoor gardens and conference rooms. Couples can search for these venues nationwide via the 'Gongyu Nuri' portal, though reservation times and conditions vary by facility.

Health authorities are expanding support for fertility testing, with the Ministry of Health and Welfare covering up to 130,000 won ($94) in examination fees for women and 50,000 won ($36) for men aged 20 to 49. Eligible individuals may receive these subsidies up to three times in their lifetime, divided by age groups. Applicants must undergo testing and counseling at participating medical centers within three months of registration and claim reimbursement within one month of the exam.

Noh Hong-seok, head of the Participatory Innovation Organization at the interior ministry, said finding necessary details during the preparation process significantly reduces time and cost burdens. He added that the government plans to continue identifying high-impact public services tailored to citizens' daily needs.
