Interior minister conducts final safety check for Yeosu Island Expo

Interior Minister Yoon Ho-joong visited Yeosu on Friday to conduct a final on-site inspection of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, which opens in one week. He examined exhibition spaces, visitor traffic flows, and emergency response systems.

This marked Yoon's third visit since April as he verified preparations across the main venue and key thematic islands, including Theme, Future, Culture and International islands. Focusing on areas prone to crowding, he ordered officials to finalize measures preventing accidents caused by dense crowds.

The minister reviewed contingency plans for extreme weather, alongside protocols for fires and medical emergencies. He directed police, fire departments and local organizers to strengthen coordination so response mechanisms function immediately during any crisis.

Yoon also inspected visitor amenities such as restrooms, shaded shelters, information centers and restaurants while checking traffic management plans for access roads. He emphasized strict supervision to prevent visitors from facing unreasonable charges or inconvenience.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which has conducted joint inspections with local governments on facilities and disaster safety, plans to thoroughly supplement any deficiencies identified during this visit before the opening.

"With the opening just a week away, relevant agencies must work together to ensure no minor risks or inconveniences occur," Yoon said. "I hope the expo will promote the beauty of Korean islands globally and inject new vitality into the region."

The event runs from Sept. 5 to Nov. 4.
