Interior ministry raises earthquake alert after Haenam tremors
The interior ministry raised its earthquake crisis alert after a magnitude-3.1 earthquake struck Haenam amid repeated smaller tremors.
The interior ministry said Sunday it raised its earthquake crisis alert to "caution" after a magnitude-3.1 earthquake struck Haenam, where repeated smaller tremors have prompted a preemptive response.
The quake hit at 6:43 a.m., and the alert was raised from "interest" to "caution" at 11 a.m. Maximum intensity IV was recorded in Haenam. Intensity III was recorded in Mokpo, Muan, Sinan, Yeongam and Jindo, while intensity II was observed in Gangjin, Gwangsan, Naju, Wando, Jangheung and Hampyeong. Authorities had received two felt reports, one from Haenam and one from Sinan, by 6:53 a.m., but no damage reports.
Since Aug. 14, 71 small earthquakes, including seven of magnitude 2.0 or above, have been recorded in the area.
Kim Gwang-yong, head of the ministry's Disaster and Safety Management Headquarters, said, "Although there has been no damage so far, earthquakes have repeatedly occurred in the same area, so please maintain a thorough emergency response posture in preparation for additional earthquakes and promptly and accurately communicate related information to the public."
People were advised to shelter under a desk and protect their heads during shaking, then move to an open area once it stops. If a tsunami occurs, they were advised to seek higher ground or a building with at least three floors.
