National Data Office hosts meeting with Japan's Statistics Bureau

The National Data Office said Tuesday it would host a bilateral meeting with the Statistics Bureau of Japan through Aug. 26 to share 2025 population census experience and discuss data and artificial intelligence use.

The office said the countries, which have cooperated since 1982, have recently strengthened cooperation around shared challenges in AI-driven statistical innovation and data governance. The 63rd meeting at the Daejeon Government Complex will include a five-member delegation, including Ako Taijiro, director of the Japanese bureau's Statistical Survey Department.

Ako said, "This meeting will be a great help in exploring ways to improve Japan's use of administrative data and provision of microdata."

In addition to combining administrative and survey data, providing microdata and AI-based innovation in statistical services, delegates will discuss the office's expanded role following its elevation, building and servicing a statistical register, operating a Statistical Data Center, and census implementation experience and strategies.

"Cooperation between the two countries is more important than ever as data and statistical production and services undergo a paradigm shift," said Lee Myeong-ho, deputy head of the National Data Office.
