Hyundai posts 81.6 percent jump in second-quarter operating profit

The trading firm reported strong growth across all major earnings metrics as revenue climbed nearly 47 percent year on year.

Hyundai said Wednesday its second-quarter operating profit jumped 81.6 percent from a year earlier to 62.9 billion won ($44 million).

Revenue for the quarter climbed 46.8 percent to 2.82 trillion won ($1.97 billion), while net income swung higher by 154.8 percent to 40.3 billion won ($28.2 million). Pretax earnings rose 184.7 percent.

Cumulative revenue for the first half totaled 4.89 trillion won ($3.42 billion), with aggregated operating profit reaching 109 billion won ($76.2 million).

In the first quarter, the petrochemical division stood as the largest contributor, accounting for 36.5 percent of consolidated sales with 756 billion won ($529 million) in revenue. The passenger vehicle unit generated 411 billion won ($287 million) in sales and recorded an operating profit of 11.6 billion won ($8.11 million). These results reflect the performance of Hyundai's six operating segments, which include steel, energy components, and machinery infrastructure.

The company noted that its financial outcomes remain sensitive to fluctuations in oil prices, exchange rates, and global interest rates, alongside shifting protectionist policies and changes in global value chains.
