South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said that a software-defined vehicle recommendation developed by the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute had been formally adopted by the ITU-T.

At an ITU-T Study Group 21 meeting in Geneva, the recommendation and a related technical report were adopted. The recommendation is ITU-T's first SDV international standard and sets technical requirements for functions needed to provide SDV services.

The ministry said the documents can provide a common reference for automakers and software companies, easing development burdens from differing specifications and improving service compatibility among vehicles.

The work also brought an ITU-T appointment for Cha Hong-gi, head of ETRI's Intelligent Information Standard Research Section, who was selected as rapporteur of ITU-T's Q10/21 working group on autonomous driving and vehicle multimedia. Cha is the first Korean to take the formal chairmanship.

"It is a remarkable achievement that Korea can lead international standards for software as well as automobile manufacturing," said Park Tae-wan, the ministry's director general for information and communications industry policy.
